Indulge in the simplicity and the rich flavors of a plunger coffee brew. The beauty of this age-old brewing method is its simplicity - all you need is your trusty plunger, some freshly roasted coffee, and boiling water. Whether you prefer your coffee black or with a dash of milk, this brew method never disappoints.
What you'll need
- Plunger
- Kettle
- Scale
- Timer
Recipe
Makes about 2 servings
- 30g coffee (roasted for filter or espresso – see note below)
- 500ml water
- Total brew time: 5 minutes 10 seconds
- Grind size: coarse
Note: Opt for a filter roast if you savor your plunger coffee black - it will bring out the floral and fruity notes along with the inherent sweetness of the coffee. An espresso roast, however, is best if you relish your plunger coffee with milk, or if you have a liking for a 'stronger' tasting coffee, since it features less acidity and a fuller body.
Steps
-
Start by bringing 1L of fresh water to a boil.
-
While the water is heating, warm your plunger by swirling some hot water in it, then discard the water.
-
Add 30g of coffee to your plunger, place it on the scale and reset to zero.
-
As soon as you start the timer, pour in 500ml of freshly boiled water. Allow it to steep undisturbed for the first 5 minutes.
-
After 5 minutes, give the brew a gentle stir (this is your "agitate" step). Wait for another 10 seconds, then carefully plunge down. Pour and serve immediately to enjoy the best flavors.
Remember, a great cup of coffee is a balance of precision and your personal taste. Experiment with different types of coffee or adjust the coffee to water ratio to find your perfect cup.
